According to Western media reports (including NBC4 Los Angeles), the accident occurred on Sunday, 21 December, on the Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California. The car in which Zampella was travelling veered off the mountain road and crashed into a concrete barrier, after which it caught fire.
There were two people in the car. One of them died at the scene, trapped in the burning car, and the other (presumably Zampella himself) died later in hospital from his injuries.
Vince Zampella was considered one of the most influential people in the industry. His career shaped the face of modern gaming. As part of Infinity Ward, he created the Call of Duty series, which became a global phenomenon.
After his scandalous departure from Activision, he founded a new studio, Respawn Entertainment, which gave gamers Titanfall, Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series. In recent years, Zampella led the development of the Battlefield franchise at Electronic Arts, trying to restore the series to its former glory.
